Local authorities have the power to require the removal or alteration of electrical instalation work that does not comply with the Building Regulations.

Please be advised that as from March 2004 it is a statutory requirement that all modifications and or additions to domestic electrical wiring be carried out in accordance with 16th edition IEE wiring regulations and in accordance with Part 'P' having been completed by Part 'P' qualified and registered electricians employed by approved electrical contractors.

Approved Government Document P states 'For the purposes of Building Regulations an 'electrical installation' means fixed electrical cables or fixed electrical equipment (emergency standby generators) located on the consumer's side of the electricity supply meter'.

The provision of a petrol, diesel, LPG, wind or solar powered generator having and automatic or manual transfer installed between the meter and consumer unit falls within this definition.

Should you chose NOT to contract DSI Power Ltd to install your generator your installation will need building regulation approval from your local government planning department.

Extracts from Part P - New Requirements

Requirement P applies to electrical installations that are intended to operate at low volyage or extra-low voltage and are : a) in or attached to a dwelling; b) in the common parts of a building serving one or more dwellings, but excluding power supplies to lifts; c) in a building that receives its electricity from a source located within or shared with a dwelling; and d) in a garden or in or on land associated with a building where the electricity is from a source located within or shared with a dwelling.

Work that is subject to the provisions of Part P will have to be notified to the local authority. The work will need to be inspected by the local authority building control service or the work will need to be carried out and approved by a 'Competent Person' (an appropriately qualified electrician who is registered with a 'Competent Person Scheme'). Appropriately approved electrical contractors will be able to self-certify that their work meets the requirements of the Building Regulations. In this case the Building Control Body must be notified via the relevant Competent Person Scheme that work has been carried out. The person ordering the work should be given an Electrical Installation Certificate signed by the Competent Person.
